The Madeleine Milburn Literary Agency has secured the 30th foreign translation deal for Fiona Barton’s transatlantic bestseller The Widow.
Further to being No.2 on The Sunday Times bestseller list in the UK, The Widow is now climbing the New York Times chart in the US and is already at No.9, and has hit the Globe and Mail List in Canada at No. 1!
Languages now include Bulgarian, Chinese Complex, Chinese Simplified, Croat, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Korean, Macedonian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.
Further to all the deals the MM Agency made since the London Book Fair last year, including optioning the TV rights to Playground Television, Milburn says ‘it’s terrifically exciting to see The Widow become a global hit. Barton has been ecstatically welcomed over the last few months whilst touring the UK, US and Canada.’
“Barton skillfully weaves a tale that reminds us that yes, we can be deceived by others, but we can just as easily deceive ourselves….And here is where the brilliance of The Widow lies. Whom do you trust? Whom can you trust? And not just others but ourselves as well. The Widow reminds us that relationships are not black and white to those in them — they’re forever grey.” USA Today
“Her prose is deft and her story well told.…richly character-driven in a way that is both satisfying and engrossing….The Widow is a fast start for an author whose talent merits a large and happy readership.” The Washington Post
“Both a taut reconstruction of a crime and a ruthless examination of marriage…A smartly crafted, compulsively readable tale about the lies people tell each other, and themselves, when the truth is the last thing they really want to know.” Entertainment Weekly
