The Madeleine Milburn Literary Agency had a fabulous time at the Frankfurt Book Fair this year selling rights to international publishers worldwide.
Thérèse, Sarah and Madeleine all took meetings with over 200 international editors in the International Rights Centre over the space of five days. We had an exciting guide to present, with hot new debut titles on our adult list and an exciting new Middle Grade title on our children’s list, along with a host of best-selling books from all our fantastic existing authors. The Rights Centre was a hub of buzz and activity, and we had several on-the-spot offers for rights along with international auctions being held over the course of the week, which attracted lots of attention.
We had brought along a whole set of our beautiful book proofs and finished copies, which is a surprisingly rare thing amongst agents, and really helped draw attention to our list and gave our meetings exceptional focus.
Thérèse says: “I thoroughly enjoyed my first book fair with the agency, it has definitely been my most exciting Frankfurt Book Fair to date. We had built up enormous momentum for some of our books in the few weeks preceding the fair, and we had a great time keeping up the buzz during the entire fair, and pulling it through to the next week, which has culminated in a whole host of deals and auctions since. We have such a wonderful and desirable list, I loved pitching every single book by every single author.”
Madeleine Milburn added: “There was a very healthy appetite for our books from international publishers. We handled multiple international auctions for our exciting debuts, Eleanor Oliphant by Gail Honeyman and If You Knew My Sister by Michelle Adams, but also had huge success selling more rights and getting new interest for our established authors. It’s wonderful to see all our books working on an international level. We had offers for translation rights from across the globe including territories such as Germany, France, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain Italy, Scandinavia and even further afield from China, Thailand and Japan.”
